Conservation Efforts Underway as of July 1, 2003
by Klamath Basin farmers and ranchers:

• KBID has voluntarily started pumping groundwater in place of taking Project water.
• Certain irrigators within KID are doing the same.
• This evening, local businesses ran an add urging conservation in the Herald and News.
• 17,000 acres of Project farmland have already been idled via the water bank.
• A total of 60,000 acre-feet of environmental water this year will be generated through the water bank, including groundwater pumping.
• Over 600 applications prepared by farmers have been received by the NRCS for Farm Bill cost-share funds to help with on-farm conservation.
• TID pumped its wells last week to help reduce lake diversions.
• East-side districts spilled water that helped areas served by UKL to reduce diversions.
• Klamath Drainage District advised its patrons to hold off on irrigation in late June until today to help with end-of-the-month water level concerns.
