California Farm Bureau Federation presents Modoc County Farm Bureau Nov/Dec. 2008 Newsletter A leading Northern California cattle rancher and conservationist, Dan Byrne, has received the California Farm Bureau Federation Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented posthumously to Byrne, who died in October. "Dan was one of those leaders who never insisted upon taking credit for his accomplishments but, I guarantee you, his contributions to agriculture and his community are many and far-reaching," California Farm Bureau President Doug Mosebar said in giving the award to Byrne's widow, Geri, and his family, during the Farm Bureau's 90th Annual Meeting in Burlingame last night. A former president of the Modoc County Farm Bureau, Byrne served on the county Farm Bureau board for more than 20 years and also became a valued member of the California Farm Bureau Public Lands Advisory Committee. In 2005, he was elected to the California Farm Bureau board of directors, representing the Lassen, Modoc and Plumas-Sierra county Farm Bureaus. Mosebar described the Byrne Brothers Ranch, which Byrne ran with his brother, Mike, as "a leading model of land stewardship that benefits wildlife, habitat, water quality and other important resources." He noted that Byrne frequently welcomed researchers onto the family ranch to conduct studies and field trials. "Dan often had an innovative solution to meet the goals of all parties, Mosebar said. "He understood the common goals of ranchers and environmentalists, and how we can cooperate to stay in business while enhancing the land we live on." Byrne was one of two Farm Bureau leaders to receive the Distinguished Service Award. The award was also presented to longtime agricultural leader C. Paul Johnson of Visalia, a former Tulare County Farm Bureau president, California Farm Bureau director, a founder of the California Walnut Commission and leader in other commodity organizations. The Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor bestowed by the California Farm Bureau and has been given each year since 1953. The California Farm Bureau Federation, the state's largest farm organization, works to protect family farms and ranches on behalf of 91,000 members statewide.
