Tulelake Airport lawsuit handed to Modoc County

Herald and News  8/22/14

The Tulelake City Council authorized City Attorney Megan Annand to tender existing litigation concerning construction of a fence around the Tulelake Airport to Modoc County and its legal staff. The decision was made following a closed executive session at the council’s Monday night meeting.

The Tule Lake Committee, which includes people who were incarcerated at the Tule Lake Detention Center during World War II and their families, recently filed suit against the city of Tulelake, Modoc County and others over plans to build a fence around the airport. The land used for the airport was formerly part of the detention center. After World War II, ownership of a portion of the camp was transferred to Tulelake for use as an airport. Although owned by the city of Tulelake, the airport is in Modoc County.

In the suit, the committee says the fence would hinder access to a large portion of the former center. Modoc County officials say the fence is not intended to prevent access but is needed to prevent wildlife from being on airport runways.
