Tulelake Marine injured in Iraq

Lance corporal is in good spirits, family members say

   TULELAKE —A 21-year-old Marine from Tulelake is recovering from injuries suffered by an explosion in Iraq Monday.
   Tony Sanders, a lance corporal with the Marines, was on patrol Monday in Karmah, a city northeast of Fallujah, looking for trip wires when an Iraqi set off an improvised explosive device, or IED, with a cell phone. Sanders had a piece of shrapnel in his arm.
   “He is doing OK now. As well as can be expected,” said his mother, Jodie Sanders. Sanders and her husband, John, have spoken with their son on the telephone. “He’s in good spirits. He doesn’t want anyone to worry about him. He can’t wait to get back to his unit.”
   Sanders enlisted in the Marines after graduating from Tulelake High School in 2004. He is on his second tour in Iraq. He is married to Jamie Cross Sanders.
   “It’s bittersweet,” his mother said of his injury, noting her son was the only one hurt by the explosive.
   “ We ’ r e v e r y t h a n k - ful nobody else was hurt and thankful his injuries weren’t life-threatening. We just want him to come safely. He’s there to do a job and we’re very, very proud of him.”
   Sanders is among the severa l people f rom the T u l e l a k e , M e r r i l l a n d Malin areas serving or having served in Iraq with the Marines, A rmy or Nav y.
