The Klamath  County Republican Central Committee passed a resolution earlier this month opposing the Klamath Tribes regaining a reservation from national forest land.

In the resolution, the committee cites concerns about hunting and fishing rights, impacts of a land return on Klamath County's tax inflow and access to the lands.

"...the Klamath County Republican Central Committee does hereby declare its opposition to any and all proposed acquisition of Fremont/Winema National Forest Lands, whether by the Klamath Tribe or by other entities..."

Klamath tribal leadership has been in talks with the federal government about a return of federal land since 2000.  At a meeting with the Klamath "County Board of Commissioners on June 13, Allen Foreman, chairman of the Tribes council, said the Tribes would be willing to pay "fair market value" for the land.

The Tribes reservation was abolished by the federal government when the Tribes, formerly called the Klamath Tribe, were terminated. The Tribes were reinstated as a government in 1986.
