Dr. Calvin L. Hunt, 87, passed away at his home in
Klamath
Falls on April 15 , 2008.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday , April 21, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Shasta Way Christian Church, 5838 Shasta Way.
Dr. Hunt, “Cal,” was born in Klamath Falls on June 26, 1920, to Dr. Warren and Ethel Hunt. He grew up in Klamath Falls with his brothers Bob, Don and Jim, who preceded him in death.
After graduating from high school, Cal attended Oregon State University and University of Oregon Medical School in 1943. He served his internship at the State of Wisconsin General Hospital.
He served two years as a captain and surgeon in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Battle Creek, Mich.
He began his medical practice in Klamath Falls as a physician and surgeon from 1947 to 1967 and, in 1967, started a practice as a specialist in allergy and respiratory disease until he retired in 1986.
Cal was active in the medical community and other civic organizations. He was past president of the medical staff at Merle West Medical Center, Klamath County Medical Society, Oregon Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, American Association for Clinical Immunology and Allergy, and Klamath Council of Alcoholism.
He was an active member of Oregon State Medical Association, Society of Clinical Ecology and Rotary Club of Klamath Falls.
He served for three years in Honduras and El Salvador, doing mass polio inoculations. He also served in the Philippines for several weeks at a medical clinic, helping indigenous mountain people. Cal was intrigued with agriculture in the Philippines and, with the help of a friend, started a banana plantation. It was a successful venture, benefiting people of the area and assisting in providing improved living conditions. With the help of his family and the Klamath Rotary, he organized shipment of 37 tons of school books to the Philippines.
In his retirement, Cal enjoyed hiking (climbing Mount Whitney at age 76), backpacking, riding horses, fishing, hunting and visiting with family and friends. He loved to travel with his wife Helen in the United States, Canada and Australia. They both kept busy and energized fighting for better government, irrigation, water issues and environmental concerns.
Cal is survived by his wife Helen; daughters Louise Hunt, Anita Hunt and her husband Mike Wendling; sons Tim Hunt and Robert Hunt and his wife Betty; step-daughters (Suzie Vaught,) and Jacqui and her husband David Krizo; grandchildren Marie and husband Joe Klemmer, Sarah and husband Jake Whetzel; step-grandchildren Ira Krizo and wife Susanna, Phaedra Krizo, and Aaron Vaught; great-grandchildren Corwin and Everett Whetzel; stepgreat-grandchildren Wyatt Vaught, Will Krizo-Maurer and Jonathan Krizo.
