Letter from Klamath Falls City Councilman Bill Adams to Congressman Walden, Senator Jeff Merkley and Senator Ron Wyden

Congressman Greg Walden

Senator Jeff Merkley
Senator Ron Wyden

Dear Senators and Congressman
re:Senate Bill 2379

You have recently received a letter from Klamath Falls Mayor Todd Kellstrom telling you that the City Council is endorsing SB2379.  That is truthful in as far as it goes.  What he doesn't tell you is that the decision to support this bill was by a 3 - 2 vote of the Council, with two of us not supporting SB2379.

While their is mixed support by members of our agricultural community, I believe it is only because they have their backs against the wall.  The majority of this community does not support this bill because it requires Dam Removal.  This was shown by the election of all three County Commissioners who have opposed the KBRA and recently sent you a letter opposing SB2379.

We do need parts of this agreement to maintain irrigated agriculture in the Klamath Basin, and I think the majority of our citizens would agree.  As a whole congress has done a very poor job of taking care of the real problem that has plagued all of Oregon's natural resource based industry; the Endangered Species Act. Without changes to the ESA everything that SB2379 does to help our water problem can be trumped by the ESA.

Take dam removal out of your bill and make some changes to the ESA.
--

William E Adams
City Councilman
