Time to Take Action

Tulelake Irrigation District

 TID

TID monthly meetings, the 2nd Monday
of each month, usually 8pm at TID office.

In 2001, when the Bureau of Reclamation shut off irrigation water to 1400 Klamath Basin Irrigators, California granted TID money for emergency wells to be used to keep crops and/or cover crops alive.

By 2005, the National Marine Fishery Service's Biological Opinion demands over 100,000 acre feet of water from irrigators to be used to raise the lake levels and river flows, contrary to the recommendations of the National Academy of Science. They take stored irrigation water and groundwater. Following are:

Klamath Project Water Update 3/31/18
Yesterday March 30th was a Tulelake Irrigation District meeting let by manager Brad Kirby with more than 50 farmers attending. Bureau of Reclamation will not tell us when we can begin irrigating our fields. Klamath Lake, Sprague River, and Klamath River are full. TID paid 78% to build the Lost River Diversion, however we are not allowed to use that overflow presently; the water is being diverted into the Klamath River to flow to the ocean. The Hoopa Tribe (they live on the Trinity River, not the Klamath) sued to send more of our water down the Klamath River, so the liberal judge will not even hear the case until 2 weeks after our normal start-up date. The Hoopa Tribe took 10 times their limit of salmon. Klamath Tribes filed a lawsuit to take more water into the lake for suckers. There are 10's of thousands of suckers. FWS planted million$ islands in Tulelake and Lower Klamath to attract fish eating birds. We may not learn until mid May or June when or if we will be allowed to use our deeded water in 2018.

Irrigators file lawsuit over Klamath refuge restrictions, H&N from Capital Press 4/13/17. "The Tulelake Irrigation District, Klamath Water Users Association, Tulelake Growers Association and three private farms have now filed a complaint against the agency, arguing that plans for the Tule Lake and Lower Klamath refuges violate federal laws."

We have been given no previous information on the pros and cons, however comments are due tomorrow at the informational meeting or to be received tomorrow by mail.

Groundwater study group meets Nov. 18. Residents can find out more about groundwater rules, H&N, posted to KBC 11/16/14. KBC Note: The KBRA / Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement mandates Klamath Basin irrigators to have a groundwater management plan which will control how much groundwater an irrigator may use on their own property, mandating 'no adverse impacts'. What constitute an "adverse impact" will be decided by tribes, environmental groups, government agencies and a few farmers. Tulelake Irrigation District has already installed this mandate of the KBRA. However, they did tell their constituents that their plan "is not a requirement of...the KBRA..." and "will not regulate groundwater within the Plan area."

Tulelake Irrigation District public meeting November 6, 6 p.m., Firehall, regarding mandatory water quality permits. Also to be discussed will be redistricting and voting for TID board members based on how many acres you farm.

Tulelake Irrigation District well water level report 11/4/11

Tulelake Irrigation District's Water Management Plan, 10/10/11, was drafted by MBK engineers. p 15: "A 1998 Reclamation draft report...determined the overall effective efficiency of the Lower Klamath Basin as a whole is between 90 and 95 percent. The efficiency is a result of available tailwater and lateral losses for uses within the Project. This report concluded that little could be gained through increased on‐farm efficiency within the Project area. The report also stated that careful consideration should be taken prior to implementing various water use efficiency measures since they would reduce supplies to downstream water users; and therefore, potentially impact and reduce the overall Project efficiency." KBC NOTE: This document including maps gives the reader a general idea of the history, layout, and efficiency of the Klamath Project.

Thursday April 22, 10 a.m. Tulelake Irrigation District special meeting

Tulelake Irrigation District board of directors, January 14, voted unanimously to tentatively approve the KBRA and Klamath Hydroelectric Agreements. The first public input meeting will be 1/21/10. They did not attend the public input meeting in Klamath Falls, and evidently they deem the wishes of their constituents unimportant. Facts these directors know:
* the affordable power rate promised to the irrigators is determined by the Secretary of the Interior, and any lower rate accomplished must be paid back.
sec.17.3.2.B
* any block of water promised to the irrigators after they downsize tens of thousands of acres of ag land, and relinquish control to the feds and enviros, will still be subject to Endangered Species Act, Biological Opinions, Climate Change studies, and tribal demands.
* There is no immunity from the above regulations or from lawsuits which have already begun.
